When the dragons attacked a thousand years ago, the magical defenses of Arcanum Conservatory sealed the place in ice. It was meant to be temporary, but the ice never thawed, and the scholars all died. Their books, however, remain intact. If they can be thawed out, we can reclaim the knowledge of our forebears.
