21,879 marriages sets Guinness World Record for most in-game marriages in 24 hours
To introduce the Carnival of the Ascended Patch, the developers decided to ring in Valentine's Day with the goal of setting a Guinness World Record for the most in-game marriages in a 24-hour period.
Today, Trion CCO and Rift Executive Producer Scott Hartsman announced that it's official! With 21,879 marriages, the new world record was set from January 13th at 9 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST) to 9 p.m. PST on January 14th.
Establishing this record was a monumental achievement for our development team and community of passionate players, and I couldnt be more proud, Hartsman said. Ascended Weddings were a great way to lift the veil on Rifts new Gatherings feature, social experiences that bring players together in new and interesting ways. We look forward to expanding this great new gameplay element in the always-evolving world of Telara.
Guinness speaks about the record
Gaz Deaves, Gaming Editor for Guinness World Records, also chimed in about the record: Its great to see the seeds of love blooming in virtual worlds, and particularly impressive to see so many gamers getting together to say their vows for one event like this. The evidence submitted was of a very high standard and we even witnessed some of the ceremonies ourselves, so this achievement will definitely be considered for the next Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition.
The Community Team at Trion ran a contest to announce the event. Players were invited to share their love story with the community. The winners had their nuptials announced via server message and their weddings were officiated by James "Elrar" Nichols. Trion also posted videos of the winners' in-game weddings as well as their love stories on the Rift Community Blog.
Magelo also ran a contest for the event. Winners recieved a free Rift Box code for their loved one, as well as free Premium Service. The winning love poems and sonnets may be found here.
