The Marquis Valone is Hylas's most trusted vassal. He escaped from justice in Scarwood and made his way into the Plane of Life. We have consulted with our most powerful druids and they report that he leads an army of Aelfwar against the Amber Throne in Hylas's name. We cannot let him seize the seat of power in the Plane of Life. Hylas's final ally must be drawn back to Telara, and imprisoned. Take Hovas, the sacred shield of Thorvin the Justicar. Hurl it at Valone to make him mortal before you slay him.

This is the last of Hylas's allies. His spirit is bound within this sacred amber shard, thus is the fate of all that abandon their souls for the false promise of power. This lies the path to becoming a demon. From what you described the Marquis Valone and his court were well on their way towards becoming a new form of monster.
