Have you empowered the weapon? Even so, it is only at the beginning of its evolution! The stronger it becomes, the more energy it can absorb, and thus grows even more powerful! I believe it is currently primed to take in planar energy. Rifts, and the powerful beings that use them, would release the power we need to take the weapon to its next stage of development.
